Test Modules & Format

IELTS assesses your English proficiency across four skills:

1. Listening – 30 minutes (40 questions)

4 sections: conversations, discussions, and academic talks

Tests your ability to understand spoken English in everyday and academic contexts

2. Reading – 60 minutes (40 questions)

Academic or General Training versions

Tests comprehension of passages, opinions, arguments, and data

3. Writing – 60 minutes (2 tasks)

Academic: Essay + Data/Chart/Graph analysis

General Training: Essay + Letter writing

Tests ability to present ideas clearly, logically, and appropriately

4. Speaking – 11–14 minutes (face-to-face interview with an examiner)

Part 1: Introduction & general questions

Part 2: Individual long turn (Cue card)

Part 3: Discussion on abstract topics

Tests fluency, coherence, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation

IELTS Test Versions

IELTS Academic – For students applying to higher education or professional registration.

IELTS General Training – For migration to countries like Australia, UK, Canada, New Zealand, or for work experience.

Scoring & Band Descriptions

IELTS uses a 9-band scale, from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user).

Band 9 – Expert user

Band 8 – Very good user

Band 7 – Good user (commonly required for university admissions)

Band 6 – Competent user

Band 5 – Modest user

Overall Band Score is the average of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).

Duration of the Test

Total Test Time: 2 hours 45 minutes

Listening: 30 mins | Reading: 60 mins | Writing: 60 mins | Speaking: 11–14 mins

The Speaking test may be scheduled on the same day or within 7 days before/after the other sections.
